Looking for a great weekend road trip from Dallas?

Enchanting Latimer County, Oklahoma is only about a three-and-a-half-hour drive, and even along the way you’ll discover great sightseeing, small-town charm, historical sites, antique and boutique shopping, and outdoor recreation.

First Stop: Durant, Oklahoma

Nope. You’re not in Texas anymore.

After less than two hours, you’ll be in Durant, OK. Durant is home to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma headquarters, and an area rich in Oklahoma history and charm.

The Magnolia Capital

Durant is also the Magnolia Capital of Oklahoma. Magnolia trees line many of its streets, and can also be found all over Southeastern State University’s campus.

If you're lucky enough to be heading that way during the end of May and early June, you might get to see the beautiful blooms, and maybe even attend the annual Magnolia Festival.

Durant Eats

Speaking of magnolias, if you’re hungry for some great comfort food, one place we like in Durant is Magnolia Cafe.

Delicious eats, wonderful service, a fun atmosphere, and disco fries are on the menu. If you haven’t tried disco fries, the time is now, you’re on vacation!

Durant Sights

Now that you’ve fueled up, let’s talk about sightseeing in Durant.

While there, be sure to check if there are any special events going on by the Choctaw Nation. There are often public events meant to teach, entertain and inspire the community, and everyone is welcome.

For those who have a passion for history, there are a couple of spots you won’t want to miss. Fort Washita is a National Historic Landmark.

Built-in 1842, it was created to serve as the southwestern-most military post for the United States. The main purpose of the fort was to maintain peace for the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations.

While there, you can tour restored structures, watch Civil War reenactments, and take part in special events.

The Three Valley Museum is another great spot to immerse yourself in some history. There you’ll find displays highlighting the history of Bryan County, where Durant is located.

Some of the exhibits are a recreated small town illustrating what the area would have looked like in the early 1900s, a Native American Gallery highlighting the tribes of southeastern Oklahoma, and a transportation exhibit.

Don’t Miss The Peanut

For all of you serious road trippers and IG aficionados, have we got one more spot for you! Make sure to visit the World’s Largest Peanut located right in front of Durant City Hall. 

Now, is it a true claim? Is it really the world’s largest peanut? Nope.

After you’ve stretched your legs in Durant, head to your next stop only an hour and a half away, Wilburton, Oklahoma.

Welcome to Wilburton

Downtown Wilburton is absolutely charming, and also in the midst of a growth spurt. Be sure to wander its Main Street to get a feel for this inviting town.

While there, don’t miss out on the always delightful Vintage Rose Boutique and Coffee Shop. This mom-and-daughter run spot is great for unique clothing, gifts, and delicious coffee and beverage pick-me-ups.

If you find yourself in Wilburton in the evening, we love Dry County Bar. It’s the perfect place to kick back and relax with a drink, and enjoy some often featured live music.

History Abounds

After spending time in downtown Wilburton, head out on the historic Butterfield Overland Trail.

This was the first overland intercontinental public transportation and mail system in the U.S. The trail is a perfect mix of paved and rugged, and ideal for road biking or a scenic drive.

Who doesn’t like a log cabin? Make sure to stop at the over 170-year-old Edwards Store log cabin, it’s really cool and sparks the imagination of what life was like in these forests long ago.

Also, check out Mount Station, the scene of the infamous stagecoach wreck that set the fascinating character, Easweard Muybridge, on a path to inventions in the field of photography and moving pictures.

Outdoor Adventure

Getting back to fascinating character, no visit to Latimer County is complete without a day at Robbers Cave State Park in the San Bois Mountains.

Here you’ll find caves that Jesse James and other legendary outlaws once used as a hideout.

At Robbers Cave you’ll find opportunities to hike, climb, bike or get out on the water, this is the best state park in Oklahoma.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, go on a trail ride or overnight cowboy campout with Robbers Cave Stable.

Your next stop is about a half hour away, Talihina, Oklahoma.

Final Stop: Talihina, Oklahoma

Surrounded by beauty.

Be prepared for stunning view after stunning view. You’ll find the wonderful little town of Talihina nestled between the Kiamichi and Winding Stair Mountains.

Culture and History of Talihina

Talihina is the Chocktaw Nation word for the railroad.

Talihina was established in 1887 as a station stop on St. Louis and San Francisco railroad. If you’re up for historical sites, it’s a great place to be as it's home to Native American burial grounds, historical trails, and even a WWII crash site.

To learn more about the Chocktaw Nation, do not miss a visit to the Chocktaw Capitol Building in nearby Tuskahoma, about a twenty-minute drive.

Downtown Talihina

Downtown Talihina has several local stores and restaurants to enjoy.

We like My Crystal Chandelier Coffee House and Gift Shop for fun shopping and the chance to indulge in coffee and pastries.

When it’s mealtime, head to Pam’s Hateful Hussy Dinner for fried chicken, Indian bread, and coconut cream pie.

The Gateway

Talihini is the gateway to Talimena State Park in the Ouachita National Forest.

Talimena is full of beautiful hiking and biking trails, fantastic wildlife viewing, and ATV opportunities.

There is also both tent and RV camping in the park. If you prefer a roof over your head, there are several other places to lodge in the area as well.

The Crown Jewel: Talimena National Scenic Byway

Talimena State Park is the entry point to one of the most spectacular drives, the Talimena National Scenic Byway.

This 54-mile winding drive through the Ouachita Mountains from Talihina to Mena, Arkansas.

Immerse yourself in stunning panoramic views and landscapes.

This drive is particularly popular in the fall with the gorgeous red and gold foliage that puts the mountainscape ablaze in color.

There is even a yearly Fall Foliage Festival in honor of this magical time of year, so if you're a fan of the fall, plan your trip accordingly.
