Sardis Lake Revealed: Discovering the Best Kept Secrets of this Natural Gem

Escape To Sardis Lake

The Oklahoma state park system has many beautiful natural areas, but none are more breathtaking than Sardis Lake State Park in Choctaw County.

Located only a few miles from Timber Ridge Estates, this beautiful recreational oasis grants plenty of opportunities for fun throughout the year, including swimming, hiking, camping, fishing, and boating activities.

Sardis Lake is The Crown Jewel of Oklahoma's Recreation.

This massive reservoir in Pushmataha and Latimer counties offers thousands of acres of pristine land, fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities.

The lake has something for everyone to enjoy whether you're looking for an adrenaline rush or just want to relax on the whopping 117 miles of shoreline with family and friends.

The lake provides a place for all types of outdoor recreation and leisure activities.

Sardis Lake is Surrounded By The Majestic Ouachita Mountains

Sardis Lake is surrounded by the majestic Ouachita Mountains, which is part of what makes the area so stunning and unique.

The Winding Stair Mountains are to the north, the Potato Hills to the northeast, the Kiamichi Mountains to the south, and the Jackfork Mountains to the west. All of these are subranges of the Ouachita Mountains.

Sardis Lake is part of the Kiamichi Basin. The lake was created in 1980 due to a dam built on Jackfork Creek, which is a tributary of the Kiamichi River.

The work was done by the United States Corps of Engineers, which were contracted by the state of Oklahoma.

If you’re wondering where the name “Sardis” comes from, look no further than what lies beneath. The lake was simply named for the town of Sardis, Oklahoma, which was submerged during the flooding of the lake.

Sardis Lake is a Campers’ Paradise

Sardis Lake offers many outdoor activities, including camping.

There are three campgrounds available at Sardis Lake State Park, including family campgrounds that provide easy access to a variety of outdoor activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating.

There are also various facilities offered including general hookups, restrooms, showers, a playground, a swimming beach, boat ramps, and fishing docks.

Additionally, there are facilities for group camping and picnic areas, some equipped with electricity and large outdoor cooking grills.

The Best Hiking In Southeast Oklahoma

Hiking trails are available throughout the park, providing access to views of beautiful lakeside vistas and wildlife. Expect to see a lot of waterfowl and birds of prey throughout the year.

Additionally, the vegetation brings breathtaking color each season. Look for flowering dogwood and redbud in the spring, wildflowers in the summer, and stunning fall colors. Speaking of color, don’t miss the chance to see a sunset out here!

Hiking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise.

The trails at Sardis Lake are well-maintained, making them easy for all ages and skill levels to hike.

A well-known trail, The Lost Buffalo Trail, is located in the Potato Hills Recreation Area. The trail connects two of the campgrounds and ends at Potato Hills south beach.

The ¾ mile trail meanders through a diverse forest ecosystem and is named for the buffalo that once roamed the area.

Surround Yourself with Mountains

There’s nothing quite like being out on a lake surrounded by mountains. You better believe that getting out on the water has never been so stunning!

Sardis Lake itself offers many options for outdoor water fun. Not only do the calm waters mean that it’s a great place to swim, but boat ramps are available at Potato Hills South, Sardis Cove, and The Narrows.

Boating, skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and paddle boarding are all great options for fun with family and friends on Sardis Lake.

Plus, since Sardis Lake is off the beaten path, it never feels too crowded on the water or on public beaches.

Sardis Lake Offers World-Class Fishing

Lake Sardis offers the best in fishing fun and success.

In fact, between the general habitat health and maintenance of the area, and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation fish stocking program you are primed for success!

Sardis Lake is known for its large bass, but there is also great fishing for channel and blue catfish, threadfin shad, walleye, sunfish, crappie, and bluegill.

Pro-tip, Buffalo, Anderson, North Jackfork, and South Jackfork Creeks have proven time and time again to be great spots for making great catches.

Over 8 Thousand Acres Open For Hunting

Sardis State Park has over 8,000 acres open for hunting. The principal game species include wild turkey, squirrel, and waterfowl.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation manages all hunting activities in the area.

The area is also subject to seasonal hunting restrictions, and some areas may be closed to hunting during certain times of the year.

Please remember that all hunting and fishing are regulated by State and Federal laws, and the same licenses are required as in other parts of Oklahoma.
