Summer Fun Near Tuskahoma: Free (or practically free) Activities to Explore
Summer is that magical time of year when school is out and life opens up for some family fun, relaxation and exploration. The Tuskahoma area of Oklahoma is a great place to head to that’s a bit off the beaten path and offers several free (and almost free) activities.
So if you’re looking for some fun family activities in Southeastern Oklahoma, we have a few suggestions!
Sardis Lake
What’s better than a cool and refreshing lake on a hot summer day? Not much! Sardis Lake is the perfect place for hanging out with friends or family this summer. It’s huge, it’s stunning and a day pass is only $2.
Luckily, a day pass gets you quite a bit!
First of all, it gets you the lake whether using it for boating, swimming, world-class fishing or all of the above. There are also nature trails, hiking trails and mountain bike trails.
You’ll have access to beaches, boat launches, playgrounds, picnic areas, grills and even designated hunting areas. Park Rangers are always on duty to help with any questions.
Sardis Lake also offers pavilions for a fee, so make sure you reserve one next time you’re planning a large group outing to the lake. If staying longer, there are both tent and RV campsites available to reserve. I
f you’re ready for some good old-fashioned summer family fun on a lake, you definitely can’t go wrong with beautiful Sardis Lake.
Robbers Cave State Park
Ready for some adventure? Robbers Cave State Park in nearby Wilburton is Oklahoma’s best state park. This storied park is where outlaws such as Jesse James used to hide out.
How exciting to walk in his and other infamous outlaws’ footsteps! Located in the San Bois Mountains, there is a never-ending list of things to do, and the parking fee for the day is only $10.
At Robbers Cave State Park you’ll find rappelling, caves to explore, hiking trails, boating, swimming, fishing, miniature golf and the list goes on. For animal lovers, there is even a $3 petting zoo!
For an extra cost, there are stables where you can ride a horse on the trail for a day, and also pony rides for kids.
If you want to make a weekend out of it, there are many places to stay within the park. There is available tent and RV camping to reserve, cabins to rent and a more upscale lodge. You can even have a unique stay in a yurt or covered wagon.
Robbers Cave State Park is truly a must-see when you’re in Tuskahoma!
Historical Wilburton
If you’re up for a little history of the area, make sure to check out Wilburton and discover a couple of historical sites.
The Butterfield Overland Trail was the first overland intercontinental public transportation and mail system in the U.S. The partially-rugged trail is great for road biking or a scenic drive.
Another unique and free site to visit is the 170-year-old Edwards Store log cabin. Kids will love imagining what it must have been like to live in a log cabin.
If you’re ready to grab some shopping or just browsing time, be sure to check out quaint downtown Wilburton. You’ll find local boutiques to wander and restaurants and coffee shops if you’re hungry.

Choctaw Nation Capitol Museum
Ready to dive into more history of the area? Be sure to check out the Choctaw Nation Capitol Museum. Admission is free, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the Native people of the region.
At the museum, you’ll learn about the history and culture of the Choctaw Nation, the Trail of Tears, the Choctaw Code Talkers and more. Sometimes there are even special events such as stickball games and dancing right on the lawn.
Talihina
The charming town of Talihina is another great place to wander. The town offers more fun boutiques and eateries to explore. If you’re hungry for some classic southern cooking, head to Pam’s Hateful Hussy Dinner for fried chicken, Indian bread and coconut cream pie.

Talihina is also the gateway to Talimena State Park in the Ouachita National Forest. Admission to the park is free and here you’ll find hiking, biking and ATV trails. There are also stunning views and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.
If you’re interested in spending the night, there are both tent and RV camping available.
The crown jewel of the park is the Talimena National Scenic Byway. This 54-mile winding drive through the mountains takes you all the way to Mena, Arkansas.
You will be surrounded by stunning panoramic views and gorgeous landscapes.

There is so much for families to do and enjoy around Tuskahoma without putting a strain on your pocketbook. Southeastern Oklahoma is a summer paradise for outdoor adventure, history and small-town living.
