The Breathtaking Potato Hills of Southeastern Oklahoma
Who knew something with “potato” in the name could be described as breathtaking? Anyone who has been to Southeastern Oklahoma, that’s for sure.
What Are the Potato Hills?
The Potato Hills are an outcropping of the Ouachita Mountains in Latimer and Pushmataha counties. Located on the northeast side of Sardis Lake, they are revered as a stunning landmark of Southeastern Oklahoma, and for good reason.
The Ouachita Mountains are a unique mountain range in that they run east to west, instead of north to south like the Rockies and Appalachian Mountains. The entire range, the Potato Hills included, is covered in many different species of pine, oak, and hickory trees.
The scenic views of, within, and from this lush and forested landscape are part of what draws folks to the area. Whether interested in just taking in those views, or diving into some outdoor recreation, The Potato Hills are there to enjoy as you get back in touch with nature.
Timber Ridge Estates is Part of the Potato Hills
Your second home is nestled right in the heart of the Potato Hills. Timber Ridge Estates stretches out over 800 acres of this unique gift of nature. Here, you’ll experience stunning panoramic views all year long, throughout each of Oklahoma’s four beautiful seasons.
With every season, you will be greeted with the changing landscapes of these breathtaking hills.
The winter brings a snowy wonderland, great for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Also, a perfect excuse to snuggle in front of a fire with some hot chocolate.
The spring ushers in all that lush greenery and more chances to see wildlife. This is a great time to spot the elusive black bear and other wildlife, just don’t get too close!
Of course, summertime means it’s time to enjoy Sardis Lake to its fullest! What better place to cool off? Although the shade that the trees in these forested hills provide is another great way to cool down.
Fall here is absolutely incredible. The entire area is famous for the red and gold colors that take over the hills and mountains. You will truly be awed by some of the most amazing views you can imagine.
Bonus, you couldn’t ask for a better place to experience glorious sunrises and sunsets any time of the year.
Ways To Experience the Potato Hills
So what exactly can you do out here? Aside from enjoying the incredible landscape, The Potato Hills offer many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
At Timber Ridge Estates
Here at Timber Ridge Estates, we are fortunate to call the Potato Hills our home. These forested hills have plenty of hiking and biking trails to enjoy all year long.
This land is mostly untouched, so you really have the feeling of “being away from it all”. Nothing beats the air out here, either, and you really cannot beat our views. We welcome guests to come take a tour of the property and visit our model home.
Sardis Lake
Talk about stunning views. The Potato Hills overlook one of Oklahoma’s most beautiful lakes, Sardis Lake. This large lake offers plenty of recreational activities both in and out of the water.
This includes camping on its shores in the shadow of the Potato Hills. Read more about Sardis Lake in another blog here.
Camping
There are several places to camp in and around The Potato Hills, and we particularly enjoy staying right on Lake Sardis.
Let’s explore a couple of these campgrounds.
Potato Hills South Campground
Right on the shoreline of Sardis Lake is the Potato Hills South Campground. The campground offers both tent and RV camping that is available from April through October.
Most sites are standard and nonelectric, but there is electricity at the two group shelters that are also available to reserve.
The shelters, along with BBQs and a playground, make a great place to have a family cookout, party, or get-together, including if you just want to spend the afternoon.
Whether spending the night or just the afternoon, there are several recreational activities to experience.
At the campground, you’ll have access to several recreational activities that will surely satisfy those of varying interests. Water sports on expansive Sardis Lake are two favorite pastimes for visitors.
This includes swimming, boating, skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and paddle boarding.
You’ll also find hiking opportunities on trails throughout the area. Wildlife lovers will have ample opportunity to spot a variety of birds and animals. Some of the animals you might get to see are white-tailed deer, bears, coyotes, bobcats, wild turkeys, and bald eagles - make sure to bring your binoculars!
Both wildlife enthusiasts and hunters will appreciate the public hunting and wildlife propagation areas right near the lake. We are talking over 8,000 acres of undeveloped land to explore!
Of course, another favorite pastime is fishing. Sardis Lake is famous for its fishing, and particularly for its many species of large bass. Crappie, catfish, and walleye are some of the other types of fish available to catch.
The campground includes boat ramps, making getting on the water very easy for visitors.
Potato Hills Central Campground
Looking for another great camping spot on Sardis Lake? Potato Hills Central Campground has everything that Potato Hills South has, plus a bit more when it comes to amenities.
At Central, you’ll find all of the same great recreational activities, but all of the camping sites have electric hookups. There are also hot showers available.
Not only that, but there is a dock that anyone can use for fishing, so no need for a boat if you don’t have one. Additionally, there is a fire pit that visitors can enjoy, so don’t forget everything you need for s’mores!
